The original 10”x10” layered shadowbox displays multiple elements and canvases. This specific design was inspired by Belgian Artist Rene’ Magritte, 1946 piece titled “Son of Man”. A map of Louisville is dissected in the background to highlight Bourbon with HeART location and intensifying the viewpoint of the jockey. Centered in the line of vision in the upper third of the piece is an interpretation of the final turn at the Kentucky Derby. Centered in the face of the jockey is a rose filled bowtie that is elevated off of the canvas substrate. Winning is on every jockey’s mind and the rose filled bowtie is representational of every jockey participating and spectator. The jockey silks and helmet are painted on layered transparency film enhancing the shadowbox depth and finishing the overall piece.
